Oh my, things are happening at Successful Journalism for Communities
By Rob Golub
I want to thank our growing roster of subscribers (that’s you!) - your comments and frankly the unusually high open rates for this newsletter are fuel for my fire!
You are part of this journey! I’ve got a list below of what’s new. As you read it, please do note the multiple entry points for the content – first a bold quick hit, then the meat. Numbered lists engage readers; please consider yourself engaged.
What’s new:
- Tons of speaking. I’ve been increasingly speaking on engagement and journalism – I don’t even have it all listed on our public calendar, but we do list all the major events.
- Teaching the next generation. We’re launching Successful Journalism Lab, offering a free week of the world’s only journalism and emotional engagement bootcamp. We plan to work with six amazing, high-achieving students – one has been selected so far, others to come.
- Want to be a mentor? The Successful Journalism Lab will include lunchtime Zoom visits from guest mentors. We will do the Lab again. Are you a professional in the field? Would that ever be of interest for you down the road, to serve as a guest mentor? Let me know!
- Teaching journalism basics. We’ve begun adding practical journalism guidance to the site — the kind of advice young reporters once learned from editors in the newsroom. Today’s students are smart and motivated, but many lack hands-on coaching. We aim to fill that gap.
- I’m headed to San Francisco! Hundreds of college students are gathering for a national conference. I’m speaking on emotional engagement as well as nut graphs and story focus. I love working with college students, seeing them get it as we exchange ideas. I seriously can’t wait. If you’re a student at the conference, be sure to ask me or intern Kate Alter for a free Love the Nut sticker!
The world is on fire. The issues are real. And yet, we can make a difference. We can connect with journalism audiences to bring them truth, a light in the darkness.
Please help me spread the word. Let’s do this.
Rob
P.S. Are you worried about whether running a numbered list with the first few words bolded is AP Style? Please don’t. Take this rule into your heart: When AP Style and emotional engagement are in conflict, we choose emotional engagement. I’m an old dog journalist, yes I am. I work to follow AP style, but also, keeping it real, it can’t save us.
